When do you have to sacrifice life and limb, time and money, to prevent harm to others? When must you save more people rather than fewer? These questions might arise in emergencies involving strangers drowning or trapped in burning buildings, but they also arise in our everyday lives, in which we confront opportunities to donate time or money to help distant strangers in need of food, shelter, or medical care. With the resources available, we can provide more help--or less. In The Rules of Rescue, Theron Pummer argues that we are often morally required to engage in effective altruism, directing altruistic efforts in ways that help the most. Even when the personal sacrifice involved makes it morally permissible not to help at all, he contends, it often remains wrong to provide less help rather than more. Using carefully crafted examples, he defends the view that helping distant strangers is more morally akin to rescuing nearby strangers than most of us realize. The ubiquity of opportunities to help distant strangers threatens to make morality extremely demanding, and Pummer argues that it is only thanks to adequate permissions grounded in considerations of cost and autonomy that we may pursue our own plans and projects. He ultimately concludes that many of us are required to provide no less help over our lives than we would have done if we were effective altruists.

Book Description
Every human being is living a life, but how much humanity does he have? Birth, education, job, marriage, kids, family and at the end…death! Is this the standard cycle of life that has to be followed? What is the ultimate goal of such a life? Why do we take birth? What do we want? The human body that we have received... should do the duty of being humane. There should be humanity in life. But what is humanity? According to Param Pujya Dadashri, the Gnani Purush (the enlightened One). The definition of humanity is that when someone hurts you, troubles you, you don’t like it. Hence, you should also not hurt anyone. That, according to Him, is the biggest humanity. Whoever understands this and applies it in life means he knows what is humanity. Getting a human body means one is free to go to any is one of the four forms of life (gattis). One is human form, the other three being – animal form, devgatti (heaven/celestial being) and narak gatti (hell/beast form). Whatever are the causes so are the effect. If we show humanity, we will get a human body in the next birth. If we are inhumane, we will be re-born in the animal form. If we are extremely bad and inhumane then we are re-born in narak gatti. If we spend our life in doing good for others and help them without any expectations then we get a life in devgatti. In this book, Param Pujya Dadashri has discussed the concepts of humanity with the humble intention that if people learn about humanity then their human life will be fruitful.

Book Description
Those seeking to lead a spiritual life inevitably face challenges in their sincere pursuit of spirituality and practice. As spiritual development progresses, facing the many unintentional mistakes made through mind, speech, and conduct can become disconcerting. Naturally one begins to wonder, “Is it too late to apologize?”, “How to forgive and forget in unhealthy relationships?” and, “How to forgive yourself - both for mistakes of the past and for ongoing mistakes in the present?” One of the most powerful tools for spiritual healing of both past and present is repentance with sincere apology. Yet, among the many spiritual books available today, it is rare to find a scripture on forgiveness. In the book “Pratikraman”, Gnani Purush (embodiment of Self knowledge) Dada Bhagwan describes the spiritual power of forgiveness prayer, and offers a precise formula for asking for forgiveness. This extended version of Dadashri’s book “Pratikraman: Freedom Through Apology & Repentance” allows anyone seeking to practice spiritual forgiveness prayer to gain a profound understanding about how to repent, how to forgive someone, and how to begin forgiving yourself. This book is an invaluable resource for spirituality and health.

The Morality of Defensive Force

The Morality of Defensive Force PDF Author: Jonathan Quong

Book Description
"This book provides an account of the central moral principles that regulate the permissible use of defensive force. Quong argues that we cannot understand the morality of defensive force until we ask and answer deeper questions about how the use of defensive force fits with a more general account of justice and moral rights. In developing this view the book offers original accounts of liability, proportionality, and necessity. Quong also argues, contra the dominant view in the literature, that self-defense can sometimes be justified on the basis of an agent-relative prerogative to give greater weight to one's own life and interests. The book also provides a novel conception of individual rights against harm. Unlike some, who believe that our rights against harm are fact-relative, Quong argues that our rights against being harmed by others must, in certain respects, be sensitive to the evidence that others can reasonably be expected to possess. The final chapter provides an extended defense of the means principle, a principle that prohibits harmfully using other persons' bodies or other rightful property unless those persons are duty bound to permit this use or have otherwise waived their claims against such use"--

Book Description
Women who have survived sexual abuse are among the most traumatized individuals who seek therapy. Assisting such clients to reframe transcend their abusive pasts requires enormous sensitivity and therapeutic skill. Reclaiming Herstory: Ericksonian Solution-Focused Therapy for Sexual Abuse will greatly help therapists hone their craft with its solution-focused, Ericksonian approach and highly refined techniques for working with this population. The approach the authors present has evolved through work with hundreds of sexual abuse survivors. The authors have found their techniques to be remarkably effective in helping these clients to regain a sense of freedom and empowerment in their lives. The authors view the healing process as a collaborative partnership in which the therapist co-creates with the client a positive context for healing. This process comprises four distinct stages through which every client must pass in order to achieve their own unique potential. The book clearly describes the primary symptoms and features of the four stages, which are: Breaking the silence and unmasking the secret Becoming visible Reclaiming and reintegration of the self Empowerment and the evolution of the sexual self It also presents, for each stage, a series of detailed metaphorical stories, exercises, and rituals designed to assist a client who is traversing a particular stage. Numerous suggestions, lists, questions, and vivid case studies help the therapist to identify and assess the individual needs of a particular client and then pinpoint those tools that will best facilitate the healing process at a given stage. Recognizing the severe toll that work with sexually abused clients can take on the therapist, Reclaiming Herstory also provides strategies for self-care that can be used during various stages of therapeutic practice. The volume also provides a timely and important discussion of the controversial false memory backlash and its impact on the survivor and implications for the therapist.
